Safety Requirements

1.   SCRUTINEERING
You must present your car in clean condition, together with its Vehicle Identity Form, for scrutineering at each race meeting. When you present a car at scrutineering, you will be deemed to have declared that the car is in safe, raceworthy condition.

2. CIRCUIT BREAKER
a.  Wiring.
You must install a general circuit breaker (or "cut-off" switch) that isolates all electrical circuits (with the exception of those that operate the fire extinguisher) TOTALLY from the battery. The circuit breaker switch must have the battery and alternator/dynamo (and any fire extinguisher circuit) on one side and all other electrical circuits on the other.  On cars with magneto ignition, an earthing switch on the low-tension side of the magneto must be incorporated.

WHEN YOUR CIRCUIT BREAKER IS SWITCHED TO THE "OFF" POSITION, YOUR ENGINE MUST STOP RUNNING.

b. Location.
The circuit breaker must be easily operable from inside and outside the car. We
recommend that the outside control be fitted at the base of the windscreen on the driver's side or within 50cm of that point. In closed cars, you may mount the switch on a perspex rear side window behind the driver's seat.

c.
Triangle Mark.
You must mark the circuit-breaker control with a red spark in a white edged blue triangle with a base of at least 120mm.

3. FIRE EXTINGUISHER
a.  Capacity.
You must install at least a hand-operated fire extinguisher of 2.5 kg capacity, securely mounted in the car. If it is necessary to fit two smaller extinguishers, these must be of equal capacity of not less than 3 kg. We recommend a semi-automatic (driver-operated) system, discharging into the engine compartment, conforming to the requirements of the FIA's Appendix J.

b.  "E" Mark.
To avoid confusion with the circuit breaker control, you must mark the cable pull or switch of a plumbed-in fire extinguisher by a white or red circle with the letter "E."

4.  OIL CATCH TANKS
Unless your car has closed-circuit breathing, you must install a catch tank of a minimum capacity of 2 liters (if your engine capacity is up to 2 liters) or 3 liters (if your engine capacity is over 2 liters). However, if your car is supercharged and its engine capacity exceeds 1.3 liters, you must use a catch tank of at least 3 liters.

5. THROTTLES
You must equip each carburetor butterfly with an external return spring.

6. REAR-VIEW MIRRORS
You must fit at least two framed rear‑view mirrors with minimum total glass area of 100cm2.

7. LAMPS
You must tape or cover all front lamp glass. It is specially important that your rear brake lights work, otherwise you will be disqualified.

8. BONNET
You must ensure that your car's bonnet is adequately fastened and held closed by at least one supplementary safety catch.

9. TOWING-EYES
You must install towing-eyes at the front and rear, unless the suspension is exposed.

10. MUDGUARDS (FENDERS)
Your tires must not protrude beyond the bodywork. Your car's mudguards (or fenders) must cover the total width of the tire's tread for at least 120o.

11. ROLLBARS
If your car was built after 1961, you must install a rollbar meeting the specifications in Annex C of these Regulations. ( 3 ) We recommend rollbars for all cars.

12.  SAFETY BELTS
a.  Requirement.
If you have a rollbar in your car, you must also install a "4-strap" harness, with each strap having a minimum width of 2 inches, meeting the requirements of FIA's Appendix J (1993). You must not modify safety belts.

b.  Installation.
You must use two fixing points to the body shell for the abdominal straps and two or possibly one fixing point, symmetrical in relation to the seat, for the shoulder straps.

13. CABLES, LINES, AND BATTERY
a.  Cables & Lines.
If you change or modify your car's fuel, oil, or brake lines, you must protect them externally against any risk of damage (by stones, corrosion, mechanical breakage, etc.) and internally against all risks of fire.  If you retain your car's original fittings, additional protection is optional. All fuel lines passing through the cockpit area must be protected.

b.  Battery.
If your car's battery was originally installed in the cockpit and you decide to keep it in the cockpit, you must put the battery in an insulated, leak-proof cover, and mount it securely.

14. BUMPERS
YOU MUST REMOVE THE BUMPERS AND THEIR SUPPORTS, unless they constitute an integral part of the bodywork. This rule is optional for the following cars, whose bumpers the FIA considers an integral part of their bodywork: Abarth 850TC and 1000, Austin and Morris Minis, Porsche 912 and 911, Shelby GT350, and Lotus Elan.

15. RECOMMENDED ITEMS
We recommend:
a.  headrests
b.  fire proof bulkheads, especially between the fuel tank and the cockpit
c.  FIA-approved safety fuel tanks or tanks filled with safety foam in conformity with American Military Specification MIL-B-83054 (baffle material) or "D-Stop" anti-explosion foil. ( 4 )
